Who Am I?

I remember being a kid and desperately wanting the L'oreal shampoo for kids that was packaged in a fish shaped bottle. I remember feeling inferior showering off after a day at the pool and using Pantene. I remember wanting to pretend I forgot my shampoo so I could share with friends and feel cool, even though everyone knew I never forgot a thing.

I'm now preparing to move to a new state, a new city, a new home. I'm sitting amidst a pile of Things. Stuff. Junk. Sorting out the keepers, the donations, and the trash, I found myself thinking about the way our society has began merging an individual's identity with his or her material possessions.

How many times has a guy been "the one who drives the Raptor" instead of "the one who is really sweet"? Or how many times has a girl been "the one who's living at the Cottages" instead of "the one who is beautiful inside and out"? How many times have you heard "if only I had [something cool/popular] just like everyone else"?

I want to be a person who sees people for who they are not what they have. I want to see the kind hearts, sweet smiles, and funny personalities. I want to identify people by their virtues instead of by their materials. Let's take the steps toward being a society of people not of things.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19

  1. Let me be the first of many to say, wow! This is great! I love reading these comments of days gone by. We all grow steadily but surely, and then, all of a sudden we stop and realize we have definite opinions, likes and dislikes. All the little things add up to our complete personality. Great job - Perfect verse.
